I have no doubt that there are a lot of people out there looking for ways to make their lives better in general. We don't have a divine right to be happy, but we also shouldn't just give up and settle for second best. I'm the kind of person who mostly just wants to be happy. I don't want to be a billionaire, but what I do want and have now found is inner peace.
When I try to think of ways to make my life better, I ask myself a series of questions:
What parts of my life don't make me happy?
How can I make my life better?
Am I happy with the job I have right now?
Am I happy with how my money is going right now?
Am I happy with the way things are between me and my girlfriend?
How can I make my life easier and less stressful?
These are just a few of the many questions I ask myself, and I only listed them to show what I mean.
In the past, the beginning of the year was always a very stressful time for me. This was because my son's birthday is in November, and then, of course, Christmas is in December. Since I tend to spoil my family and spend more than I should, these two things would give me a little bit of a financial headache.
I didn't want to spend less on their gifts or on the social parts of Christmas or my son's birthday, so I started looking for a way to deal with this financial stress, which, as I said before, would happen in January.
What I finally decided to do, which seems obvious now, was to save as much money as I could each month. I would have a goal in mind for how much I wanted to save, since I knew I also needed to live and have fun during the year. By November of the next year, I had saved up quite a bit of money, which made both events even more fun than they had been the year before. This was because I felt at peace with myself. When January came, I was fine because I had no debts and no worries about money. This is how I save money now, and I do it every year.
Every time I ask myself a question, I try to come up with a solution like I did in the example above. I try to talk to my girlfriend if she is bothering me for any reason. I tell her what's going on and ask her if there's anything I do that bothers her. So as not to cause more damage, etc., this is done in a very lighthearted way.
I've gotten to a point in my life where I'm happy with what I have. I can sleep well at night and look forward to the future very much. I've found peace within myself, and now I just have to work hard to keep it that way. At times, life is a fight, and the bad part of my brain tries very hard to destroy me. I'm going to stay strong and focused so I can ignore this negative voice and keep listening to the good side of my brain.
