Diabetes is found in one person every 21 seconds. Every 21 seconds, a new reason to walk comes along. Who are you looking for? The American Diabetes Association (ADA) has started a new theme to help people understand what's really going on with the diabetes epidemic. The main message at America's Walk for Diabetes events all over the country will be "Every 21 Seconds." Every 21 seconds, participants will get a white and red bandana. A horn or drum will also sound to show that another person in this country has been diagnosed with diabetes. At the end of the event, the many bandanas will make a strong visual representation of how diabetes is hurting people in the United States.
America's Walk for Diabetes is the ADA's main walking event to raise money for research, education, and advocacy related to diabetes. People from all over the country come to this big event to walk up to six miles with their friends, family, and coworkers. Diabetes affects nearly 21 million children and adults in the United States, and another 41 million are at risk of getting it. The American Diabetes Association (ADA) works to stop and cure diabetes and to make life better for everyone who has it.
Diabetes is the fifth most common disease that kills people in the U.S. If things keep going the way they are now, one in three Americans born in 2000 and one in two minorities born in 2000 will get diabetes at some point in their lives. The American Diabetes Association has raised and given more than $300 million so far for research into diabetes.
Equal Sweetener is the national sponsor for the America's Walk for Diabetes, which is put on by the ADA. Equal and the other national corporate sponsors, Cary's Sugar Free Syrup, Diet Rite, and Kmart Pharmacy, all want to help people with diabetes by raising awareness, teaching them about the disease, and giving them ways to deal with it.
