When we start something new, it's exciting and we're very motivated and committed. But as time goes on, the initial excitement can fade as the reality of how much work is involved sets in. Even if you aren't as excited about the new change or goal you are trying to reach, that isn't a sign that you should give up. It means it's time to make a new promise.
I've been eating right and working out for four months now as part of my "New Program." I was happy, excited, and ready to go for the first three months. But I've found that the last month has been a bit harder, and I've started to slip a bit in my new ways of eating and exercising. As I got worse, so did the results, so I thought it wasn't working. When they looked more closely, they saw that it wasn't the system that wasn't working. Any system will work if you put the effort into it. It's not magic, though. It takes work and, most of all, a strong desire to do it. When I realised that I had gone back on my promise, I made a new one and got back on track. This is all part of the process, and I don't think I've failed because I'm not as committed right now. I see it as a chance to make me more determined and keep going on the journey.
The stronger your promise will be, the more you keep it. Commitment isn't a magic pill that if you just take it once, you'll have it. Commitment is something that needs to be taken care of, changed, and made stronger. I've started to recommit every day, which helps me remember how much I want this change to work and last. You may not have to renew your commitment as often, but it's still a good idea to check in and see where you stand. If you aren't where you want to be with your goals, it might be time to renew your commitment.
