Many people would say that doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result or something different to happen is crazy. On the other hand, many people, especially those who work in the personal development, NLP, and wellness fields, would say that it's smart to have a goal and be very flexible about how you go about achieving it.
With NLP, I want to bring attention to this smart idea of improving wellness.
Do something else if what you're doing isn't working or making you healthier;
I was working with a business client recently, and one of their top managers and I had been using NLP and other techniques to help each other. He had asked his team to work on a project in a certain way. He told me that he had already told them 12 times, but they still weren't doing what he wanted. I told him that if he wanted them to change what they were doing, he might have to change what he was doing. I suggested that he be more flexible. Together, we looked at some different ways to do things, and things began to change.
If you're tired of getting the same results over and over again with whatever it is you want to change, this idea can help you start to break your current pattern. If you just keep going with an idea, you are, by definition, seeing it in a different way and doing yourself a lot of good. You'll be making yourself healthier.
So, first, figure out where you've been doing the same thing over and over again while hoping for a different result. Or an area where you'd like to improve your health. It could be a behavior, a habit, a situation, or something else. Just pick something whose outcome you want to change.
Then, make sure you know what you want to do, or what your goal is. Ask yourself what you want and how you will know when you have it.
Third, make a list of all the different approaches and behaviors you've already tried to reach your goal or improve your health. Or make a note of what you are doing at the moment.
Lastly, and most simply, make a list of some different things you will do to reach your goal and improve your health. If you think it would help, ask for help. When you have a good list, you can: (put stuff down on that list that may well not seem right for you, it is good to explore avenues that in the past made you feel uncomfortable from time to time). Then, of course, look at your list and start doing the things on it.
I want to get across the idea that you should be more flexible.
Your mind and body are really one system, so it makes sense that being physically flexible can often make you more mentally flexible. Some activities, like yoga, martial arts, dancing, swimming, and a lot of other general forms of exercise, can really help you become more flexible.
If you do any of these, you will improve your overall mental and behavioral flexibility and health. Find ways to stop doing things the same way you always have. For example, when I shave in the morning, I do it in a different way most of the time. This means I have to pay attention and change my habits. The more flexible you are, the more flexible you can be when dealing with other people. When people come to me to lose weight, I often suggest that they try things like switching their knife and fork hands around for a week.
So, go ahead and figure out a pattern you do often and change it to improve your health. Especially if it is something you are not completely happy with.
Here are some things you can do to break your current habits and improve your health. You can be as creative as you want with these ideas.
-Eat something you don't normally eat.
-Take a walk first thing in the morning.
-Watch a show on TV that you don't usually watch.
-Don't take the same way home from work.
-Have a cold shower
-Pick up your phone with the other hand than you usually do.
-Cheer up and laugh for no reason.
You'll have more fun with this if you start doing it right away. Then often, the more your health will improve. So many people I meet know or have read all of this, but they still don't do it. They then wonder why they aren't getting what they want. Try something new today, and you'll be amazed at how much better you feel.
