Do people have 200 diseases? We don't know; a doctor might be able to tell. But people who think humans should take coral calcium as a supplement say that the mineral, which comes from Okinawa lagoons near Japan, can heal more than 200 diseases. They don't think twice about adding blind people, people with AIDS, cancer, MS, and who knows what else to the list of diseases that will supposedly be cured in just 10 minutes.
Take a few more of the good things that coral calcium can do to heal and protect. Coral calcium users don't need hysterectomies and don't get rectal cancer. It also helps people with migraines and other health problems. But is it really true? Has the world found a way to stop death threats for good? Well, wait a second.
First, let's figure out what this coral calcium is and what it does for us. Coral calcium is a kind of calcium that is mined from coral on Okinawa Island, which is close to Japan. People say that Okinawa coral has a lot of calcium and magnesium, which makes it useful as a food supplement. It's also true that calcium is important for bones and teeth, and that you can get it from anywhere, like the coral reef in Okinawa.
Robert Barefoot and Carl J. Reich, who called himself a doctor but lost his licence in California about 20 years ago for being a quack, made some crazy claims about their magic discoveries and products on CFRB, a Canadian news radio station. The claim was that their products, which were clearly made from coral calcium, had cured AIDS. He used a litmus paper and the person's saliva to find out if they had a disease. This showed if they had an underlying condition (read AIDS).
So many diseases, like Alzheimer's, MS, and rectal cancer, were found with a litmus test, and people were getting sick because, as they said, we lived in an alkaline environment, which made us sick.
Let's see what the US FDA has to say about coral calcium's ability to heal. Let there be no doubt: the FDA is clear about how it deals with new discoveries. It looked at claims from many distributors and manufacturers before dealing with each of them separately. It has shown that the claims that coral calcium is good for healing and prevention are not true. Section 201(p) of the Act [21 USC 321(p)] says that most coral calcium sold on the market is against the law because its advertising makes it look like a drug. Also, the FDA doesn't have any solid information on whether or not taking coral calcium to treat or prevent illness is safe and effective.
Also, the Federal Trade Commission said that Kevin Trudeau, who marketed Coral Calcium Supreme, misled customers with false and unproven claims. By the way, you might want to keep in mind that Kevin Trudeau went to jail for credit card and financial fraud a while back.
Lastly, if Okinawans live longer than most of us, that's a different story that needs to be looked at separately.
