In coaching, there is an idea called "seed planting." It means that it takes time for people to accept new ideas and suggestions. Some clients jump on a new idea and run with it, while others need a little more time to let the idea grow. For some, it can take years for the idea to take root. Even so, some clients will never get it. It will just stop growing. What the client does with the idea doesn't really matter. The goal is to plant the seed, and then the client can do whatever they want with it. Sometimes all an idea needs is time to grow.
A counsellor once told me that not making a choice is a choice in and of itself. She said that not picking was also a choice. I thought she was crazy, so I went about my business. Five years later, when I was in a situation where I was trying to avoid making a choice, her words hit me like a tonne of bricks. I said out loud, "Okay, I get it." It took years for that seed to grow into a concept I could understand. I was ready to finally get it. I couldn't hear it before, but as time went on, I changed enough to understand the idea. It can take time to get used to new ideas. We might not be ready for the idea when we first hear it. That's all right. When you are ready, the idea will grow and be there for you.
The other part of this is that you shouldn't make other people do what you want. Share them if you want, but stop there. Planting seeds isn't a mean thing to do; it's gentle and done with love and care. You can only start a thought. What happens to it depends on the person and what they are ready to hear at the time. It could grow right away, or it could take years. That has nothing to do with you. It's up to you to plant the seed and then move on.
Everyone's lives are at different points. Sometimes you'll get a new idea right away, and you might even act on it right away. Sometimes it won't take long. Don't be hard on yourself if you can't figure something out right away. It just means that the idea is taking shape. When you are ready, the idea will grow and be there to back you up. Don't worry about it until then, and keep working on the ideas you're ready for. There will always be a lot of idea seeds coming up to keep you busy.
