This article is for you if you are thinking about becoming a dentist. (:-)
First, we'll give a quick overview of what dentists do. Then, we'll talk about some of the specialties you can choose, and finally, we'll look at what a typical day looks like for someone who works in other people's mouths. (:-)
A dentist is an expert who can find, stop, and treat any problem with your teeth or gums. Dental care includes fixing and keeping your natural teeth healthy, filling cavities, removing rotten teeth if necessary, and giving you false teeth to replace them if you need to. Some dentists are general practitioners who focus on preventive dentistry. They use diagnostic procedures, X-rays, and other tools to figure out how your teeth and gums are doing. Dentists give checkups, make moulds for dentures, fill cavities, and put bridges in place. They do their work correctly by using a variety of dental tools, hand instruments, and surgical tools. When a visit is going to be very painful, a dentist or dental hygienist may also use anaesthetics to numb or freeze the area. (:-)
The following types of dentistry are recognised by the American Dental Association:
- An oral pathologist (treating diseases of the mouth)
- Endodontics (root canal therapy)
- Dental prosthetics (making teeth or dentures)
- Dentists (related with structure of teeth)
- Dental hygienists (work with hygiene of oral cavity)
- Maxillofacial surgeon
- Periodontics (related with treating the gums)
- Oral surgeons

The job of a dental hygienist is to take care of your teeth, gums, and mouth. Your teeth will be cleaned and polished by a dental hygienist, who will use tiny tools like a mirror, a scraper to get rid of plaque, and a special toothbrush. They also floss your teeth to get rid of very small pieces of food. By taking x-rays of your teeth, they will check for tooth decay. After checking your teeth for cavities, they'll tell you and your dentist what needs to be done and, if necessary, refer you to a specialist.
