When a woman is pregnant, constipation is very common. It is caused by increased progesterone, which is normal during pregnancy, slowing down the movement of the bowels. This can make the body absorb more water.
I too had twice. In the first month, the first thing happened. It was awful. The second one made me bleed for the first time when I was 13 weeks pregnant. So, I pay a lot of attention to making sure I don't get it again. And so far I remain quite regular.
The following tips are based on my own experience:
- Eat foods with more liquid, like soup. Soup is easy to digest and has the same amount of nutrition as regular food, if not more. Plus, soup gives your body more water. I make roasted red pepper, leek, and potato cream soup or potato soup with mushrooms and marjoram instead of double-baked potatoes. Instead of roasted chicken, I use shredded chicken to make cream of chicken soup, chicken noodle soup, and tortilla soup.
- Work out once in a while. Twice a week, a 15- to 30-minute walk at a slow pace helps the bowels move. But don't do any vigorous exercise that your doctor hasn't told you to do.
- Eat more fruits and vegetables every day. Broccoli, cabbage, spinach, and other dark green leafy greens are all vegetables. Apples, oranges, pears, strawberries, and grapefruits are all examples of fruits. Also, bananas are good, but you should only eat them sometimes.
- Get plenty of water. Every day, drink 6–8 cups of water. A cup of orange juice or vegetable juice can also sometimes help. Tea, coffee, and soda with caffeine should not be drunk more than 1-2 cups per day. Don't drink more than 300 mg of caffeine a day, which is the same as four cups of coffee. I try to stay away from them as much as possible and only drink water, milk, fruit juice, and vegetable juice.
