When my mother was pregnant, I remember her telling me about it. She wore nothing but my father's jeans and work shirts the whole time she was pregnant. She couldn't buy clothes for her pregnancy because she didn't have enough money at the time. Remember that when she was pregnant, about 30 years ago, clothes were very expensive.
Even so, if you walk through any shopping centre these days, you'll see at least three or four maternity clothing stores that cater to a pregnant woman's "large" needs. And since the web and Internet are such wonderful things these days, what about maternity stores that are online? I think it's safe to say that there are about half a million real maternity stores hustling for business on the Internet right now.
And it's crazy that... YES, they do make money! I was wondering why.
Because of one simple fact: my mother, like your mother, and my grandmother, like your grandmother, didn't need maternity clothes when they were pregnant, but pregnant women today DO need maternity clothes. We live in a completely different time than they did, so we can't compare what we need during pregnancy to what they needed. No longer do the same rules work.
You're in luck if you're pregnant right now and sitting here wondering if you should buy a whole new wardrobe of maternity clothes. I have some tips for you on how to buy clothes for your pregnancy.
Buy maternity clothes that look good and can be worn for at least three pregnancies.
Like I said, maternity clothes aren't cheap these days, and you can only wear them for the nine months you're pregnant and maybe another month or two after that. And when you lose the baby weight, you'll have to put those expensive maternity clothes away or put them in sad boxes with the edges taped together with cellophane tape.
So, only buy maternity clothes that are stylish and made of the best materials. You only put on maternity clothes when you are going out. Stick to your extra-large clothes for casual outings and at home. Or, you could buy some large sweaters, t-shirts, overalls, or raglan to wear when you don't have to look too nice. It's true!
You won't need LAZY clothes when you're pregnant. In my mind, that's a contradiction.
It would also be good to have maternity clothes that can also be used for breastfeeding.
If you want to breastfeed your baby after your pregnancy is over, you'll need to think about buying more clothes, like ones that are made for breastfeeding or nursing. Now, nursing clothes aren't cheap either, just like maternity clothes. And do we NEED clothes for nursing as much as we need clothes for pregnancy? Yes, sometimes we do. I have a lot of nursing clothes that look stylish and I wear them when I go shopping or meet up with friends. Sometimes I wear t-shirts with holes in them so I can easily get to my breasts. Yes, it's funny, but who will care at home?
And if you can find good maternity clothes that can also be used for nursing, that's even better. This is a good way to spend your money.
Style of clothes for pregnant women
Many people who make maternity clothes are sleeping when they do it, so there isn't much to choose from. Most of them are nothing but flowers, spirals, safety pins, and maybe some kind of teddy bear or another. Don't worry about them! If you're going to buy maternity clothes, buy ones that make you look good. Even if the clothes you wear while pregnant are plain, that's fine. It's better than making you look like Bozo, which is what most of them do.
The point is that you want to look CLASSY and DIGNIFIED even though you're kind of... BIG. Large orange and yellow flower prints on your maternity clothes will NOT help you do that.
That's just my opinion, of course, and you can have your own thoughts about what looks good in maternity clothes.
