The Stress of Car Boot Sales!

Spend the day before the event getting rid of your mess. Back and forth to the shed and in and out of the loft. All those fights about what can go and what can't.

Clean up your mess. You do want to get a good price at the car boot sale, though.

Check to see if your car can handle the weight of all the junk you want to take to the car boot sale.

Check the tyres and the gas gauge on your car. Before going on a trip with a half-ton of extra weight in the back, do all the basic checks you would normally do.

Fill your car with the stuff you just found to be useless.

Repack your car a few times with the new things you've found until everything fits.

When you realise that your partner won't be able to get in the car, take out all of your extra stuff.

Optional: Pack up your car again, but leave a few things out so your partner can get in. Or, buy a bigger car (or van, or lorry).

Plan your route. Think about the extra time it will take to travel this distance. There will be a lot of cars going in the same direction.

Congratulations! - So, you're all set to go when the morning comes. It only took you a day to clean out the car and the clutter.

Set your alarm for 5 o'clock in the morning. That's the latest you should think about getting up.

Car boot sale day ...

It's morning now, and you're sore from all the hard work you did yesterday. So, the day has just started (although it may still be dark).

Make sure you have a good breakfast. If you're going by yourself, you won't be able to get food from the back of your car because someone could steal your stuff and your car (or parts of the car to sell on their stall).

You start to freak out when you remember that you need a table to put your stuff on. The table you used to paste things on to decorate the bedroom. The clothes hangers you used while you were decorating your bedroom. These are the best things to sell at a car boot sale.

Now, you start your trip to the car boot sale. After a few hours and a few miles on the road, you notice that it's getting a little foggy. There is no fog. It's all the exhaust from the cars on the road ahead of you.

You finally get to the field where the car sale is taking place. It's dirty. Did you bring some old shoes? Look around quickly to see if anyone is selling any.

You pay the fee for your spot and park your car. It isn't that bad. Someday, the grass will grow back.

Time to get ready for the first customer and set up. But before you can say anything, a lot of strange people crowd around you and ask very direct questions. "Do you have any toys?" is an example. These people are dealers, and they look for the best deals by taking advantage of people who don't know what's going on.

Now, the next thing is probably going to happen, since this is Britain and it's raining. Have you brought the umbrella? Remember that people pay less for things that are wet.

People walk by, and some of them even stop to look. You feel uncomfortable. These people are looking at the things that are important to you. Even though they are old, they are still a part of your history. Do they think you're bad? All you want to do is get rid of the things and maybe make enough money to pay back what you've spent for the day.

Adding up how much the car boot sale cost...

Your stuff sells well, but that's not always the case. Most booters will charge between GBP15 and GBP30. (Then spend it on more stuff you don't need). Even the time it took to do this exercise and the obvious wear and tear on your poor car are not taken into account.

So you spent $5 on the whole day. At least you got rid of that useless stuff. Now all you have to do is find a spot for the new mess. What about all the things you couldn't sell?
