Everyone wants to find the perfect gift, but sometimes things go horribly wrong. Here are some good and bad ideas for holiday gifts.
Good: A gift certificate to a spa is a good idea for your mother.
Bad: A gym gift certificate is not a good idea for a gift.
Ugly: You will get in BIG trouble if you give your mother the same bad gift she gave you last year.
You shouldn't re-gift things because you might get caught at some point. Not only was it clear that the gift wasn't appealing or you would have used it, but you should also try harder to get things for other people.
Good: If your husband plays golf, it might be a good idea to buy him a set of clubs.
Bad: You probably wouldn't impress your husband as much if you bought him a vacuum.
Ugly: The Flat-D Underwear Fart Filter, which actually exists, is a terrible idea for a gift, no matter how useful it might be.
Personal problems, especially embarrassing ones, should not be talked about during the holidays. Don't tell other people what you think. If you think your loved one should know about a product, bring it up at another time. In the same way, hygiene products don't make good gifts.
Good: It's a great idea to buy your wife a beautiful diamond ring.
Bad: It's still a bad idea to steal a vacuum, as well as cookware, an iron/ironing board, or any other item used to help other people.
Ugly: If you buy your wife a ring with your girlfriend's name on it, you'll spend New Year's with only half of your belongings.
Okay, the girlfriend thing is obvious, but a lot of people make the mistake of giving gifts like vacuums or other things for the house. You should get your wife something she can enjoy on her own. This will show her that she is more than just the cook or housekeeper.
Good: You can keep your job for another year if you buy your boss a gift certificate to a nice clothing store.
Bad: But if you buy "Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them" and your boss is a conservative Republican, you should probably start printing out your resume.
Ugly: Tongue Scraper, I don't need to say more.
Reasoning: It's not a good idea to buy someone a political or religious gift, or one that is based on a certain set of beliefs, unless you know how that person feels about that subject. If you're not sure, don't buy it.
Good: If your girlfriend of five years wants to get married, giving her an engagement ring will be a happy time.
Bad: Giving your girlfriend an engagement ring when she doesn't want to get married will make Christmas dinner awkward.
Ugly: You can guess how well it will go over if you give your girlfriend a McDonald's gift card when she was expecting an engagement ring.
Don't give "obligation gifts" for Christmas, especially if you're not sure if they'll be appreciated.
