In 1946, the Emery Express air freight company began. It was the only air freight forwarder with a licence from the Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB). The Emery Express had been working with well-known airlines, and they gave them a certificate that said they were the universal air shipping carrier.
At that time, the Emery Express company ran out of its headquarters in New York with a fleet of cars, including two Ford class waggons. Since then, the ocean, global air customs brokerage, and other logistics companies have made over $2.9 billion from express air freight.
After ten years, the company's services had spread to other countries. Its first international office was in London, where transatlantic service was set up. The express air freight was at the cutting edge of technology at the time. The Emery Control or EMCON, a computerised system for tracing and tracking, was made.
The early 1970s were a bad time because there was a fuel crisis. In the mid-1970s, the company was able to charter its own plane and then start the famous Emery Air Force.
The company now offered more services, such as using Emery aircrafts and trucks to run the whole transportation process from pick-up to delivery in a closed loop.
In 1987, the Emery Express and the "Purolator Courier" got together because of a chance to grow in the letter market. But the acquisition didn't work out as planned. The Emery worked harder to keep its services going until the well-known air freight company Consolidated Freightways Inc. bought it.
In the end, CF Inc. merged Emery with CF airfreight, which is the name of the air shipping company that is now part of CF Inc. At that time, CF became Emery's parent and owner. So, the Emery Forwarding, the new Emery, was started.
After 2 years, the Emery Forwarding, which was the new Emery, was still having trouble making money. In exchange, CFI Inc. planned and carried out changes to marketing and management that helped Emery become the market leader in the air freight business.
By 1992, new marketing strategies and ways of doing business had started to turn around the air freight industry. Slowly but surely, it won back the trust of the customers. The company had won a number of awards for being the "primary carrier" from well-known companies.
There's no doubt that the company is in a good financial place. Its profits went up, and in the same year, the US Postal Service gave it a $1 billion contract to deliver express mail for the next 10 years.
In 1992, Emery Forwarding began offering logistics services. It also improved its customs brokerage for both air and sea. The company also updated its information system to better meet customer needs.
On the other hand, CFI Inc., which is the parent company of Emery, reorganised itself by making a new motor carrier unit. In the end, it was renamed CNF Inc. along with its existing companies, Emery, Menlo Logistics, and Con-Way Transportation Services.
In 2001, Emery Forwarding and Vector SCM joined forces. It has been a service provider in the Menlo integrated group.
Emery Forwarding is still looking forward to working with more customers in a different way that leads to a better strategy and more good services and business solutions. As part of the Menlo group, the company now offers both ocean forwarding and air services around the world. It is said to have a record of 12,000 employees who offer chain services and business solutions in 200 countries.
