(From "The Complete Thomas Troward Collection" and "Secrets to the Law of Attraction")
The fact that there is creation shows that the Universal Mind doesn't think like we do, and all we have to do is look around to see that using creative power is the best thing we can do. So, desire is not something that needs to be wiped out. Instead, it is the root of every possible way of living. Life could not exist without it. Every form of expression means picking out the parts that go into that form and leaving out the parts that aren't needed. Because of this, people tend to want what is chosen over what is left out. And the universal "Law of Attraction" is what makes this desire specific.
Whether this law is at work in the chemical attraction between atoms that seem to be unaware of each other or in the instinctive, but not always logical, attraction between plants and animals, it is still the principle of selective affinity, and it stays the same when it moves up into higher kingdoms that are ruled by reason and purpose. The way things work in each of these kingdoms is determined by the nature of the kingdom, but the actions themselves are always caused by a subject's preference for a certain object over all others, and all actions involve the subject and object moving toward each other according to the law of their affinity.
When this happens in the realm of conscious individuality, the affinities show up as mental actions, but the principle of selection holds true everywhere in the universe. In the conscious mind, this attraction to its likeness turns into desire, which is the wish to make something better than it is now. We may make mistakes about what this better thing really is because we don't know enough about it. This means that when we try to fulfil our desire, we may send it in the wrong direction. However, the problem is not with the desire itself, but with our wrong ideas about what it needs to be satisfied. So, there will be unrest and dissatisfaction until its true affinity is found. But as soon as this is found, the "Law of Attraction" kicks in and brings about the better situation that we first dreamed about.
So, it will always be true that desire is the source of all feelings and actions, or in other words, of all life. The whole point of life is to receive or send out the vibrations created by the Law of Attraction. In the kingdom of the mind, these vibrations have to become conscious reaches of the mind in the direction in which they feel attracted, or desires. So, desire is the mind trying to show itself in a form that it has only thought about so far. It's the basic idea behind making something, whether it's a world or a wooden spoon. The desire to make something that doesn't exist yet is the source of both. No matter how big or small we use our creative skills, desire must always be the driving force.
All things are driven by desire. It is the force that keeps the universe going and the core of all life. So, if we try to get rid of desire as our main goal, we are trying to get rid of life itself. Instead, we need to get the knowledge we need to direct our desires toward their true sources of satisfaction. This is the whole point of knowledge, and any knowledge that isn't used in this way is only partial knowledge that has failed to do what it was meant to do and is now just ignorance. So, desire is the sum of what it means to be alive, because it is the source of all movement, whether it is physical or spiritual. In a word, desire is the power to make things happen, so it needs to be carefully watched over, trained, and guided. However, trying to make it the best it can be is the exact opposite of trying to kill it.
And each desire has its own fulfilment. As a cause and effect, the desire and its fulfilment go hand in hand. When we understand the law of how they go together, we will be more convinced than ever that desire is the most important thing in life.
