People expect a speaker to do more than just say words. Here's how to be different.
- The message is you. You have to be a good example of the principles, values, and ideas you talk about if you want other people to follow them.
- Think like your audience. Give your ideas from the point of view of how they will be most useful to them. Know that what works for you might not work for someone else. So, make sure to adopt new methods to the world in which your audience lives.
- Be original. Make your own comics and cartoons. Share your own experiences. Use your own things to do. It is wrong, unethical, and against the law to steal from other people. If you use copyrighted materials, like newspaper cartoons, the author or cartoonist can sue you. And you might find that your presentation is the same as the one you had planned to use with the original versions of the material.
- Create a safe environment. People learn best when they feel like they can try out new things and ideas without fear. Respect everyone you meet. Don't hurt anyone in the crowd, even if they seem to be getting in the way of your presentation.
- Be honest. Give citations for information that has been published. If you need to use copyrighted materials, you must get a license and pay royalties. Realize that authors, cartoonists, comedians, entertainers, and other speakers depend on their material to make a living.
- Let people find out about and try out new ideas. Adults learn by putting what they are taught to use in their lives. It helps to learn stick and is more fun.
- Be yourself. That is, don't pretend to be something you're not. Just be yourself. People can easily spot a fake. When they find one, they leave.
- Make the audience think highly of them. Give people chances to say something funny, smart, or right. Give your audience set-up lines that make them the stars of your show. Ask them questions that will show what they know. This helps adults learn by making them feel important, which makes them more open to new ideas.
- Keep it simple. People learn most from skills they can use right away.
- Talk about them with them. Everyone is most interested in their own story. If you tell your story, include them in it so they can remember it. Help them feel what you felt, learn what you learned, and party like they won.
