Since the adultBasic programme started in 2002, it has become much easier for uninsured adults in Pennsylvania to get affordable health insurance. The Pennsylvania Department of Insurance runs the adultBasic programme. It works with four different insurance companies to make sure that eligible adults in Pennsylvania can get affordable health insurance.
To be eligible for the adultBasic programme, you must be a legal U.S. resident who has lived in Pennsylvania for at least 90 days before enrolling. You can't have any other health insurance, and you have to have been without health insurance for at least 90 days before you can sign up. The only time this is not true is if you or your spouse lost health insurance because you lost your job.
There is, of course, a limit on how much money you can make each year if you want to join the adultBasic programme. How much you can earn each year and still be eligible for the adultBasic programme depends on how many people live in your home. For example, the annual income limit goes down as the number of people in your family goes down.

The basic programme covers doctor visits for primary or specialty care, hospital stays and emergency care, diagnostic tests like mammograms and x-rays, maternity care, and rehabilitation if a hospital stay is longer than expected.
The adultBasic programme costs money, and everyone has to pay for some of it. For example, there is a low monthly fee (currently less than $35) and a co-pay of $5 when seeing a doctor and $10 when seeing a specialist. If you go to the emergency room, you have to pay a $25 co-payment. However, if you are admitted to the hospital, you don't have to pay this co-payment.
The adultBasic programme is known for being cheap health insurance in Pennsylvania because the costs are so low.
