Healthy Aging Starts with Stress Reduction

Most people don't know what stress does to their bodies and minds. The heart doesn't like stress. Stress can make you feel down or give you headaches. Stress can hurt your body and mind in a lot of ways, but sometimes it can be good. Getting a handle on stress is the key to a healthier life.

If your stress level is too high, you will need to take steps to lower it. There are many ways to deal with stress.

Why does stress happen?

Many different things can cause stress. For example, bills can be stressful. If you don't have enough money to pay your bills on time, it can cause stress. Having neither a job nor children can be very stressful. Also, bad relationships can make you feel down.

What can you do to make yourself feel better?

You might feel better if you read a good book, which is one way to deal with stress. Wrap yourself in a warm blanket or find a cool place to read, depending on the weather. One of the best ways to deal with stress is to write. When you have too much stress, write down how you feel, what you think, and so on. Writing is a great way to work out, so use it. Don't do too much, so you can learn to enjoy writing instead of getting frustrated when you think about it.

You could also take a nice hot bath with bubbles. Put a few candles around the tub, get in, and relax. People can get rid of stress in a lot of different ways. You have to figure out which way works best for you. Do what makes the most sense for you.

If you can't find a way to do it on your own, you might be able to get help from your family doctor, a counsellor, a friend, or a family member. Help is a very useful tool. Build a support group that helps you live a healthier life instead of draining you.

What does my body do when I'm stressed?

If you let it, stress will do a lot of damage to your body. It will control how you feel, what you think, what you do, how you act, how your body works, and so on. If you let stress run your life, it will bring you down to nothing and make you feel like you're not worth anything. Stress can hurt both your mind and body in a lot of ways.

What can I do to feel less anxious?

Getting rid of bad habits can help reduce stress. If you can, try to pay your bills on time. If you don't have enough money to pay your bills on time, pay enough to avoid shut-off notices. You might want to make a budget so you can spend your money wisely. Help is also just a phone call away. You might find money to help low-income people pay their bills if you look in the phone book, talk to people in your area, etc.

Staying away from people who bring you down is another good way to avoid stress. If you have friends or family who are always making you feel bad, you should let them go and find more positive people to hang out with. Tough love is sometimes how we say, "I've had enough."

You can also learn to eat well, work out, and get rid of things that are bad for your health. For example, if you smoke, drink too much, do drugs, etc., you're putting a lot of stress on your nerves. If you can, put these things behind you. If you can't, ask for help to do so. You have a lot of choices. Check your resources to see what you can do.
