Every day, you hear about some big-name selling something for a lot of money. You can also start playing the game of domaining right away and hope that one day, someone will be interested in your domain name. Right?
The biggest problem with new players here is that they don't do enough research and start spending their money on name that doesn't matter. After six months or a year, their morale goes down, and they're back where they were before, but with less money.
Some people get into trouble with their trademarks. They get sued by a company that owns trademarks, and then they show their anger openly on message boards and forums.
Some people can't even sell their domains to make enough money to pay the renewal fees for the next period.
If you have four or five domains, you can definitely come up with the money. But when the number is in the hundreds or thousands, it becomes very hard to renew domains for the future.
I would tell people who are just starting out to stick to 25 to 50 domains. If your names are below average, they can earn for 10 or 20 renewals per year. Some domains might bring in more money and help you fill in the gap. In the end, the most important thing is not to lose a domain for no reason. At the very least, you should get the fees for registering it. This won't cause your domain empire, which you want to build, to fall apart. If you have more than 100 or 500 domains in your portfolio, a $1 loss is also a big loss.
So, what domains should you buy?
Be smart about which name you put your money on. Right now, three letters called ".com" are making a lot of trouble on the market. In domain name aftermarkets, their prices go through the roof. Common words from the dictionary are also no longer used. At the moment, new TLDs aren't as stable as dot-com, which still rules the internet. You might get lucky in some other TLDs, but if you're new to the game, I wouldn't recommend it.
From AAAA to ZZZZ, there are 456976 different ways to use 4 letters. Only about 5000 of them are still alive. Which is obviously rubbish.
How do we get started now if we still want to try this out?
Find a guy who wants to sell his domain for less. There are many places where you can buy these kinds of domains for less money. You can talk about these things on forums that were made just for that purpose. Here, you should also keep an eye out for trademark problems and blacklisting for that domain.
Watch and listen for the latest news. It might help, and if you're lucky, you could get that name for just the cost of registering it and then sell it for a lot of money. Work on them and make as much money as you can from them. You'll still be in the game. Here, the most important thing is not to win but to stay in the game until the end.
