The company has used many different bookkeeping programmes over the years, but finally settled on Quickbooks. To be honest, I don't care much for it, but I've become so used to it in the last few years that I don't mind it much anymore. We probably won't know who made the decision to switch to a new bookkeeping system, but it was a bad one.
There was nothing wrong with the bookkeeping programme that was already in place, and setting up a new one caused new problems that had not been planned for. First, everything had to be put into the new accounting programmes. The boss hired his son, who was an expert in computers, to do this job.
The task was to write a macro that will convert all of the files from the old bookkeeping programmes into the new one. Unfortunately, the project failed, just like everything else the boss and his family do. On top of that, QuickBooks and the new bookkeeping programmes don't work well together because they were both made by Linux geeks in their spare time. Even though it's very stable and well-coded, it's not very easy to use.
I had to do most of the work, so I had to learn how to use this text-only interface before I could enter the data from the old bookkeeping programme. Even though the new programme is more stable and maybe even faster, it is boring and takes longer to learn.
Even though I fully understand it now, I still prefer one of the accounting programmes where I can click on a few icons instead of using keyboard shortcuts.
I don't like this new programme because I have to use it all day. I think I should be able to work and interact with something more pleasant.
But it doesn't look like anyone cares about that. As long as it's free, quick, and takes up less space on the hard drive, it will do just fine.
