There are several different kinds of motor homes. In earlier articles, we talked about Type A, which is the recreational vehicle. Then we talked about Type B motor homes, which include the van camper and the travel trailer.
People often call Type C motor homes "mini-motor homes." These often have the same features as larger motor homes and can be ordered with some very nice features, but they are much easier to drive than larger recreational vehicles. Used Type C mini-motor homes cost anywhere from $5,000 to $20,000 and as much as $65,000.
The 5th Wheel is a different kind of motor home. This is the trailer that looks like a "L" and is pulled by big pick up trucks. These are also available to people who can pay for them and have a lot of money. Like travel trailers, these 5th wheel motor homes can be parked in a campground and you can use your car to go exploring.
A truck camper is a popular type of motor home for families. Most of the time, they are very cheap, costing between $8,000 and $22,000 brand new. These work well for single people, parents, and children. They look simple and do simple things.
A lot of families camp with pop ups. These are basically tents on wheels, and they are a great first step for people who want to start RVing. Two to eight people can sleep in these pop-ups. Most of the time, they have a small kitchen with a stove, sink, and storage space. The disadvantage is that you have less space and less protection from the weather because of the screening and canvas.
Talk to people you know who own RVs. Go to RV shows in your area to see the different types of motor homes and recreational vehicles for yourself.
Choose how you want to spend your time off. Are you going to stay in one place for your vacation, or are you going to explore a different place every day and sleep in a different place every night? What time of year will you be taking a vacation? During the winter, a pop up wouldn't be the best place to stay. How much do you spend on gas? Can you afford to fill up the 100-gallon gas tank of a recreational vehicle that gets 5 to 8 miles per gallon? Do you need to be more careful with your money? If so, you might want a small motor home.
