The Golden Compass: From what I could tell, if you liked the book a lot, you shouldn't see the movie at all. You'll be very upset when you leave the theatre. If you have kids younger than 10 years old, this looks like a good movie for them to watch.
Well, even after seeing the movie, I'm still not sure what all the fuss is about.
I had never read the book series that New Line Cinema hopes will be the next Harry Potter, and if the movie is any indication of what's to come, I probably won't read the books either. Even if parts 2 and 3 are made, I'm not sure I want to see them.
I could see why the Catholic League is upset about this movie, but in the end, it seems like a lot of fuss over something that isn't even that good.

Now, what I liked about the movie was that Sam Elliott was a great choice to play Lee Scoresby. When you see him in the movie, you quickly realise that he is a lot more than he seems at first.
Ian McKellen was chosen to be the voice of Iorek Byrnison, a bear in armour. Now, I didn't know what a bear would do with a lot of armour, but Sir Ian's voice makes you think that the bear will protect the hero of the movie.
I know that this is the first part of a three-part movie, but the first part should have been so much better than what we got. I said earlier that I hadn't read any of the books yet, but even I could tell that something wasn't right. The way the story was told in the movie didn't make any sense, and there seemed to be way too many holes in it. It seems to be too short by about 40 to 60 minutes.

It will be frustrating for the parents. I can see a good movie in this one, but all we end up with is another mess.
