The artist and author Timothy Goodwin wrote the science fiction and fantasy book Pariah. It has some very clear ideas about what is wrong with the world today. The characters are written with a lot of colour, and the battles are very well done.
Eric is the main character. His father beats him, and as a young adult, he lives in terrible poverty. He is eventually diagnosed with bipolar disorder and lives what could be called a normal life. He meets and marries a great woman, and her son accepts him as his dad. Eric loves his life, even though it's hard for him to find a good job and he hasn't been able to move his family to a place where his wife's allergies aren't as bad.
Eric is in a car accident and wakes up in a place called the Itarri that is very different from where he was before. He finds out later that this is a spaceship and that he is light years away from his old life, and maybe even in a different dimension. Everyone on the ship thinks that when Eric comes to, he will be someone else. He seems to be on the verge of going crazy because his memories of other lives keep running into each other. When he finally gets back to normal, he finds out that he is a clone.
Eric goes through a lot of training in a desperate attempt to do whatever it takes to get back to a time and a life he loved so much. The reader is taken on amazing space travel and time travel adventures. There are battles with enemies, scenes with gods, demi-gods, and an ex-lover who is very vengeful.
I didn't always understand what was going on, but I know from experience that books I've read many times are ones that make me think and keep me coming back. The ending has an interesting twist that I think readers may guess early on, but the work is written so well that it will keep them guessing.
