It must have been fate that Bryan Singer was chosen to direct the fifth Superman movie, Superman Returns. Singer loved the George Reeves Superman TV show when he was young. He also loved the Christopher Reeves Superman movies from the 1970s and 1980s, which were directed by Dick Donner and starred Reeves. "I see myself in Superman. I was adopted and I'm an only child, and I love the idea that he's the ultimate immigrant, that he comes from another world. He has all of these amazing powers and a sense of rightness about him "said Bryan.
Singer went to the School of Visual Arts in New York City, but didn't finish. He then went to the USC cinema school, where he met John Ottman, who wrote the score for Superman Returns. Singer's first big hit was The Usual Suspects, which he produced and directed in 1995.
In that movie, he worked with Kevin Spacey for the first time. They worked together again in Superman Returns, where Spacey plays Lex Luther, the main bad guy who just got out of jail and wants to take over the world again.
Singer has made a name for himself in the movie world, though, as an adapter of comic books who brings superheroes to life.
In 2000, as writer and director, he brought Wolverine, Magneto, and the rest of the X-Men to the big screen in a movie that was a huge success. He then brought back the characters in the next movie, X2, which was also a big hit. Singer left the X-Men series to make Superman Returns. He did not work on the third movie, The Last Stand.
Who would bet against his favourite project being the recently announced sequel to Superman Returns in 2009? He is now a well-known actor in Hollywood, and he has a number of big projects coming up.
