A fruit fly is a small flying insect with red eyes that is about 1/8 of an inch long. The most important thing to do to get rid of fruit flies is to find and get rid of the places where they breed. Even though there are many sprays and traps that can be used to kill flies in a home, restaurant, or other building, the problem can't be solved unless the source of the problem is taken care of.
Fruit flies are being checked for.
When looking for places where fruit flies can lay their eggs, keep in mind that the larvae need moist, decomposing organic matter to live. The most obvious place to look for these sources is where fruits or vegetables are kept near refrigerators or coolers. You should also look in recycling bins, trash cans that are rarely used or cleaned, and under and behind large appliances. Check the sink and any other drains. Small flies often lay their eggs in the very thin layer of trash that naturally builds up in pipes, drains, and traps.
Small bits of organic trash are often found where the legs or feet of appliances, tables, or cabinets touch the floor. This is true in both commercial and residential buildings. Thousands of fly larvae can live in these tiny holes. All of the small cracks and crevices on the floor must be checked and cleaned well.
Once a place to breed has been found, keep looking for more. Fruit flies can easily follow air currents, and most buildings have more than one place for them to lay their eggs. Don't assume that all places where bugs breed are inside. Fruit flies will come in from nearby dumpsters, outdoor trash cans, or even damp compost piles where fruits and vegetables are thrown away.
Products that get rid of flies
Here are some ways to get rid of fruit flies. For a quick kill, you can use a pyrethrin space spray. It will cut down on the number of flying insects. Pest control workers also use pyrethrin spray to spray tiny cracks and crevices where fruit flies and other pest insects live and breed. Use a Gold Stick trap to keep an eye on the area. Flies are lured into these traps with a fly sex lure. Every adult fruit fly that is caught is one less that can breed.
In lighted fly traps, pheromones and strong ultraviolet bulbs are used to catch flies. There are different sizes of these. There are different styles that can be used in public spaces, restaurants, hospitals, offices, and homes. Using ultraviolet bulbs makes it easier to catch more flying insects and makes it much less important to use sprays and other pesticides. Use the powerful Fly Trap Professional in commercial kitchens and other areas that are not open to the public or customers. The Cento Fly Traps and Luralite Fly Traps are less noticeable in places where people can see them.
If you find a drain where fruit flies are breeding, the best way to get rid of fruit flies is to use Drain Gel (also called Fly Gel) to destroy the film where the fly eggs and larvae grow. Surface sprays are not recommended unless there are a lot of flies resting on trash cans, dumpsters, or outside walls.
Another great way to get rid of fruit flies is to use fruit fly traps. Attach the trap to the inside of the lid of trash cans, dumpsters, or compost bins to catch adult flies before they can lay eggs. If the traps are full of flies or have been there for three months, throw them away.
