When you took your car to the shop for repairs ten to twenty years ago, there were shady people who would find more wrong with your car than you knew. Since there have been more reports of scams and unhappy customers, the groups in charge of auto shops and garages have made laws to protect customers. With this protection, garages and auto shops that try to cheat their customers would have to pay a lot of money.
As word got out to garages and auto shops, the number of cases has dropped by a huge amount. Even though a few are still around, they are now in the minority.
This is a bad trend that has unfortunately spread to other industries. It's too bad that greed and money still make some businesses treat their customers badly. As an example, a lot of people come into the shop and say they need new batteries. We always want to know how many batteries you have and, more importantly, how do you know when you need new ones?
Batteries on modern electric scooters are set up in a line. I have only had to replace all of the batteries in a multi-battery scooter a few times in the past five years. About 95% of the time, only one of the batteries needs to be changed.
Don't throw money away. Follow these steps if someone tells you that you need to change all of the batteries in your electric scooter.
- Take the batteries apart so that each one is on its own.
- Open the place where the batteries are kept.
- Draw a picture of how they are connected; you'll want to make sure you put them back together the same way.
- Now, get a 12-volt charger so you can test the charge and make sure the voltage is correct.
a. The voltage of a good battery should be between 13.3 and 14.8 volts.
b. If the voltage is 10 volts or less, the battery should be replaced. If the voltage reads 12 volts or more, we still don't know if that battery is good or not. But, it does not need immediate replacement.
c. If the battery charger says there's a problem, it's usually because of a bad connection. If the connections are good, the battery can't be charged, so you should replace it.
i. All of this is based on the idea that you have already connected the battery to a 12 volt battery charger and waited for the battery to fully charge.
ii. We use an automatic charger that turns off when there's a problem or when it shows that the battery is fully charged.
- Now that you know which battery is bad, you can change it. If the other batteries can be charged to 13.3 volts or more, they do NOT need to be replaced. So "DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY"
Now that you know which battery is giving you trouble, you can save a lot of money by taking it to your local Batteries Plus or 1-800 Batteries shop. These batteries are always in stock, and you can get them for as little as $25 to $30 each instead of paying up to $50 per battery. The dealers will charge you up to $55 each, so "DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY."
