Buying a motor home is not something to do on a whim. There are many different kinds of "motor homes" on the market, and each one is a different size, has a different set of features, and costs a different amount.
The recreational vehicle is the most well-known type of motor home. This kind of motor home is called a Type A. The most expensive motor home because it has the most space and is the largest. Motor homes can be as big as 45 feet long. They have all the high-end amenities you can think of. Some have washers and dryers, hardwood floors, granite counter tops, luxury leather furniture, plasma TVs with satellite, custom stained glass, and some even have large garden tub/showers. They cost anywhere from $85,000 for a used one to $400,000 for a brand-new one. Most of the time, they can go between 5 and 8 miles per gallon. Some newer, bigger cars get about 5 miles per gallon. Six people can sleep in these.
Van campers and travel trailers are both types of Type B motor homes. Most van campers are 18 to 22 feet long and have enough room for four people to sleep. A van camper that comes with everything you need can have a shower, toilet, kitchen, TV, couches, and beds. There is less privacy because the beds are closer together. Most only have enough head room for someone to stand up straight in the middle of the car. They are much smaller than Type A motor homes and have less space to store things. The van campers range in price between $43,000 and $70,000.
The lengths of travel trailers range from 16 feet to 38 feet. Prices range from $6,000 for a used travel trailer to $45,000 for a new one. Most travel trailers come with a pretty wide range of amenities. The bigger the room, the more people you can sleep and the more likely it is that you will have your own bedroom.
Many travellers like that they can leave their trailer at a trailer park and drive around the area in their car. It takes a lot of practise, though, to learn how to drive with a travel trailer hooked up to the back of your SUV.
Talk to family and friends who own motor homes. One of the first things you should do is figure out what kind of travel you and your family are most likely to do. Do you plan to spend your whole week off in one place? You might like a travel trailer. Do you want to go to a different place every day and sleep in a different place each night? Then you might like a recreational vehicle. But if the price of gas and the idea of filling up a 100-gallon gas tank on a vehicle that gets 5 to 8 miles per gallon isn't for you, you might want to rethink your choice of a recreational vehicle.
