A driver may lose his or her licence for a number of different reasons. The person may:
- Fail to follow the rules of his or her probation or be found to have broken the law, such as by not paying traffic tickets or other violations.
- Be found guilty of a crime involving a motor vehicle that causes his or her licence to be taken away or suspended. (Driving under the influence (DUI) or driving while drunk is an example of this type of crime.)
- Have more points on their driving records than their state lets them have.
All of these things can make it hard for drivers who have been convicted of these crimes to get cheap car insurance when they're ready to get back behind the wheel. Even though it takes a long time and a lot of patience to find cheap car insurance for convicted drivers, it is possible. The first step is to fix the mistakes that led to your conviction. Your car insurance company may even be able to help you.
- Ask your insurance company if there are any special defensive driving courses in your area that can help you get your licence points down.
- Do what your probation says to do and anything else the court system tells you to do. Period.
- DUI/DWI offenders can usually go to special classes that teach them about the dangers of driving drunk. This doesn't mean that they'll get their licences back any faster, but it does mean that they might be able to drop a few points from their records and make their insurance companies happy.
Remember that these options aren't always available. Talk to your current car insurance company or a new car insurance company you're thinking about doing business with and ask about ways convicted drivers can get cheaper car insurance.
