To save money at the pump, drivers might not have to change how they live. Try these easy ways to save gas instead.
Keep the right amount of air in your car's tyres. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, underinflated tyres can increase fuel use by up to 6%, and one study says that 50–80% of all tyres on the road are underinflated. By properly inflating tyres, the U.S. could save up to 2 billion gallons of gas every year, according to these estimates.
• Change your air filter often. A clogged air filter can make a car use up to 10 percent more gas. As a bonus, air filters keep dirt from getting into the engine and hurting it. You won't just save gas by getting rid of them. It might even save your engine.
• Upgrade your motor oil. Several independent university tests show that Royal Purple motor oil can improve fuel economy by up to 5 percent and make a big difference in horsepower and torque. So, drivers could save gas without sacrificing performance.
Follow the maintenance suggestions in the owner's manual for your car. If the engine is out of tune, it can use up to 15 percent more gas. Always tune up your car when the manufacturer tells you to.
• Take a load off. Don't put too much weight in your car. If you do that, you'll use more gas and it could cost you money. Sandbags, tools, and other heavy things should only be carried when you think you'll need them. Also, don't forget that carrying a lot of small, light items can be the same as carrying one heavy item. Make sure you clean out your trunk and back seat often.
