For more than 25 years, people all over the world have been able to buy tickets to see George Strait. Strait's pure country sound may be a sign of how true to his roots he is, but that doesn't mean he can't try new things and bring his own style and personality to every show he plays and song he releases. If you look at Strait's life, you can see how he became who he is.
How it all started
George Harvey Strait was born in Poteet, Texas, on May 18, 1952. However, he grew up in Pearsall. Strait's father was a teacher, but they left Pearsall almost every weekend to work on the family farm. When Strait was in the fourth grade, his parents got a divorce. His sister went with his mother, and he and his brother stayed with their father.
When Strait was in high school, he joined his first band, which played rock and roll music. But he soon realised he liked country music, and artists like Merle Haggard, George Jones, Bob Wills, and Hank Williams influenced him as he listened to them.
Strait finished high school and started college, but he soon quit and went to Mexico to marry his high school sweetheart. Strait joined the United States Army in 1971. Strait kept working on his style while he was stationed in Hawaii. He played in a band called "Rambling Country," which was sponsored by the Army and also went by the name "Santee."
Strait went back to school after being honourably discharged from the Army. He finished his degree in agricultural studies at Southwest Texas State University. Even though Strait was happy to get his degree, he also used this time to improve his music.
Career Beginnings
After he finished school, Strait worked on his cattle farm during the day, but at night he started playing at local honky tonk bars. Soon, record executives took notice of him. In 1981, he signed his first recording contract and put out his first album. The first performance went well, and it set the tone for the rest of his career.
Strait's style was clearly influenced by his favourite classic country singers, but it also had a more modern energy to it. His live shows were also very popular, and it didn't take long for George Strait tickets to be in high demand in Texas and all over the country.
Accomplishments
Overall, Strait is thought to have sold 62 million albums, had dozens of singles and albums that were at the top of the charts, and won a lot of awards. Strait has been inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame and has won dozens of Country and American Music Awards.
