As baby boomers age out of the workforce, sales of recreational vehicles have gone up. For many people, nothing beats the freedom and flexibility of taking a recreational vehicle out on the open road (RV). There are many good reasons to bring your hotel with you wherever you go, and the money you save on hotels can more than cover the cost of buying an RV in the first place.
RV travellers know that this way of getting around saves money. There are no hotel rooms to book, and if you eat in your RV instead of restaurants every day, you can save a lot of money. If you have a fifth wheel, travel trailer, or RV that you can unhook from your truck, you won't need to rent a car. Many people who travel in motor homes will pull a car behind them.
When thinking about buying a recreational vehicle, you have three options: a fifth wheel, which is pulled by a pickup truck and attaches to a wheel inside the truck box (hence the name fifth wheel), a travel trailer, which is usually pulled by a truck with a rear hitch, or a motor home. All three types of RVs have pros and cons that you should think about based on your needs and your budget. The price of gas is another thing to think about when living in an RV. Even so, it is still cheaper than staying in hotels and eating out every night.
Traveling in a recreational vehicle or motor home is often a good choice for people who want to go to different places. It may not be as good for people who like to go to the same place every year, though. If you go to the same place every year, you might save money by buying a vacation home there. Buying a vacation home and renting it out when it's not being used is a good way to save money on lodging and build equity for the future.
Many RV travellers grow to love the freedom of being on the road and how easy it is to take care of themselves. It's a great adventure to drive across the country and stop at different parks along the way. The traveller can choose to stay at a place for a day or as long as they want.
People who own RVs know that Walmart lets them camp for free. In most states, you can camp in the parking lot of a Walmart for as long as you want. I'm sure you've seen at least one time when RVs were all lined up in Walmart's parking lot. This works out well for both the traveller and Walmart. The traveller has a free place to camp for the night that is well-lit and safe, and Walmart makes money from RV owners who shop there. But recently, campground owners have risen up against Walmart's policy of letting people camp for free. Before you decide to spend a week at Walmart, it's a good idea to check with the local chamber of commerce.
