Are you one of the million pet owners and lovers in Britain who are known all over the world? If so, do you have pet insurance? If you haven't, you might want to keep reading if you want to save millions of pounds....
Let's look at two common situations that a pet owner in the UK might face:
Scenario 1:
You own a dog. The dog is in the back yard. A letter is brought to the house by the mailman. Your dog bites the postman while he is delivering the letter.
Scenario 2:
You have one. The horse is in a field getting food. When the horse is startled, it jumps over the fence and into a car coming the other way.
What do you think would happen in each of these situations? Well, if you don't already know, the Dangerous Dogs Act says that you could be sued in Scenario 1 if your dog hurts someone. You may remember this from the recent famous case involving Princess Anne. In Scenario 2, which is less common, you might have to pay damages because of how the House of Lords recently interpreted the Animal Act of 1971. In either case, you'll have to pay.
How can you limit the damage you'll have to pay if either of these bad things happen? You couldn't do that without some kind of pet insurance. So, if you have a pet and don't want to have to pay a third party a large amount of money in damages, now is the time to think about getting pet insurance.
Even though pet insurance probably won't cover all of the costs you might have to pay to defend yourself against a claim and pay compensation if you lose, because there is likely to be a minimum excess payment and a maximum cap payment, you can get coverage that will pay a large portion of this amount for a reasonable annual premium.
But at the end of the day, pet insurance is just like any other kind of insurance. Would you drive your car on the roads without being covered in case of an accident? If you didn't have home contents insurance, would you leave all your valuables at home? Do you want to take the chance that you could get a million dollars in compensation for a personal injury even though you didn't pay much for pet insurance?
