FAMIS Moms is a program that helps pregnant women get health care for up to two months after giving birth.
Smiles for Children is a program that offers diagnostic, preventive, restorative/surgical, and orthodontic services (Basically the same coverage as provided through Medicaid) Since this program is mostly for kids, it only offers a small number of diagnostic and oral surgery services that adults need (emergency only)
This program is great because the co-payments are only $2.00 or $5.00. Checkups are free, and there are no monthly fees or costs to join. With Smiles for Children, there are no co-payments or costs for dental services. But you have to use dentists who are part of the network.
For any of the FAMIS programs, the applicant must be a US citizen under 19 (for the Children's program), live in Virginia, and not be covered by another plan. You can't get Medicaid because you haven't had insurance for 4 months. There are also rules about income. For example, a family of four can't make more than $40,000 a year in gross income. On the FAMIS website, there is a family income calculator that would-be insured people can use to see if they meet the income requirements.
The Commonwealth of Virginia knows that good medical care is important and has made it possible for low-income residents to get health insurance at a low cost.
