Do You Need Health Or Travel Insurance?

No one plans for a problem to happen while they are on vacation, but you should be ready for one.

Medical care and hospital stays can be expensive for travellers who get hurt or seriously sick while travelling. The Medicare/Medicaid programme through Social Security does not cover hospital stays or medical care outside of the United States.

Before you leave the U.S., you should find out what kinds of medical care your health insurance will cover overseas.

Seniors who want to know more about how Medicare supplement plans cover medical care abroad may want to contact the American Association of Retired Persons.

If your health insurance doesn't cover hospital or medical costs abroad, you should buy a temporary policy that does. Travelers can get short-term health insurance and help in case of an emergency.

You can get the names of companies that offer these policies from your travel agent, your health insurance company, or ads in travel magazines. In addition to health insurance, many policies include insurance for trip cancellation, loss of luggage, and travel accidents. Some companies that sell travellers checks offer protection plans with the purchase of travellers checks.

Medical Evacuation

Some health insurance companies may pay for "usual and reasonable" hospital costs abroad, but very few will pay for a medical evacuation back to the United States. Depending on where you are and how sick you are, medical evacuation can easily cost $10,000 or more.

One of the best things about health insurance and emergency assistance plans is that they often cover medical evacuation to the U.S. Even if your regular health insurance covers you in case of an emergency while you're abroad, you might want to buy extra insurance to cover medical evacuation.

No matter what kind of health insurance you choose for your trip abroad, don't forget to bring your policy ID card and claim forms with you.

Do you need insurance for your trip?

You might not need travel insurance if you already have other insurance policies that cover you well enough.

Depending on the plan, travel insurance usually covers you if your trip gets cancelled or cut short, if you need emergency medical care while you're away, if your luggage gets lost or stolen, and if other bad things happen.

Before you choose a travel insurance plan, you should learn as much as possible about it and read the fine print. You should carefully look over any agreements you have with your travel agent, tour operator, airline, or other companies involved in your travel plans. There may be written guarantees in the agreements.

If your plane ticket is fully refundable, you might decide you don't need trip cancellation or interruption insurance.

On the other hand, it may be important to know that some insurance plans can protect you by paying for the costs of the following:

A serious accident or illness that happens suddenly to you, a family member, or a travel companion.

The airline, cruise line, or tour operator ran out of money.

Strikes or natural disasters that make it hard to travel.

A terrorist attack in a foreign city within 10 days of when you were supposed to arrive there.

The fact that you, a member of your travelling family, or a travelling companion were put in quarantine or needed to serve on a jury.

A situation where you were directly involved in an accident on the way to your trip's departure.

You should look at your other insurance policies. For example, if your luggage gets lost or stolen, your homeowner's or renter's insurance may pay for it.

If you bought your ticket for your trip with a certain credit card, you may also get extra travel insurance.

Your health insurance may cover you in certain ways no matter where you go. But it is very important to know that some policies only cover some of the costs of medical care abroad. Also, as was said in the section on health insurance, Medicare and Medicaid won't pay for hospital stays or medical care outside the U.S.

Your travel agent should be able to help you figure out which plan will work best for you. Before you buy travel insurance, carefully look over the plan, and don't buy coverage you may already have.
